18 Weeks
I am very sorry that we have not updated the blog in a few weeks. Every week I tell Jason we need to update and get our 10 week ultrasound pics up, but it never happens. I’m just not a blogger. When something exciting happens, I call and text my parents and siblings. But once it’s out of my mouth, I’m not as adamant about sharing news with the rest of the world. I‘ll try to get better at this.
Here is our sweet little miracle at 10 weeks.
I did have something very exciting happen last week……I felt the baby move for the first time! (No it was not gas!) Tuesday (16 weeks 4 days) I was sitting on a bench in Wal-Mart cause I was too exhausted to continue shopping, and all of a sudden it was like a goldfish did a back flip in my lower abdomen. It was so exciting, and then I felt it 4 more times! It was even more exciting when Jason felt the baby move on Thursday (17 weeks 6 days) this week. It really is an amazing feeling, although I’m sure in a few short months when I’m getting sucker punched in the ribs I will think differently.
Well, since we will be finding out the sex of our baby in 2 weeks (October 8th, I really can’t believe it’s that close!) we decided that we would like our friends and family to participate in a poll—boy or girl? My dad suggested that we make it a true betting poll and collect a fee to participate, just a little extra cash for the baby ;). I guess we’ll spare you this time; Paypal is too much of a hassle :P.
What do you think, boy or girl?

A little miracle
Jason and I began trying to get pregnant at the end of 2008. We did not anticipate it being so difficult. While many friends were announcing their exciting news, we were struggling trying to make news of our own. In January of this year (2010) a doctor on base was finally willing to help us get to the bottom of our problems.
January and February
In January we began seeing specialists and running tests, trying to get to the source of the problem. Jason’s tests all came back normal, even though we all know he’s not very normal ;). My initial tests, on the other hand, were not normal. My blood work came back with slightly elevated levels of prolactin (hormone produced by the pituitary gland to stimulate the production of milk), and an ultrasound showed I had cysts on my ovaries. We thought we were in for a simple fix, possibly some medication to regulate the hormone production which would also take care of the cysts.
March
To get things rolling I had to have an MRI of my head to find out what was causing the elevated prolactin. They found the culprit: a small, benign tumor on my pituitary gland. Unfortunately that’s not all that they found. Initially, the doctor told me that I had a malformation of my brain, but she didn’t know what it was so she wanted me to see a neurosurgeon. I don’t know about all of you, but seeing a doctor who performs brain surgery was not on my top ten must do list. I was also told I needed to see an endocrinologist concerning the hormone imbalance. I only had to wait ten days to see the neurosurgeon, who explained that the malformation is called a Chiari Malformation (a problem present at birth that affects the area in the back of the head where the brain and the spinal cord connect). Basically my medulla oblongata can be squeezed by the malformation, causing an increase in pressure, so they say I am sixty percent more likely to have a stroke than the average person. The neurosurgeon said they would not operate unless I showed severe symptoms, such as unbearable headaches. I will continue to see this doctor to evaluate the situation.
June
One specialist down, one to go. Well, let me tell you, I have never had to wait so long for a doctor’s appointment! The endocrinologist could not see me for ten weeks. Holy Cow!! We finally got to see the endocrinologist on June 8th. It was not a very productive appointment, just more blood work. We got the blood work back a week later and everything was normal, even the prolactin levels. At this point we were under the assumption that we would not be able to get pregnant on our own.
But little did we know, we were already pregnant.
After 18 long months of trying to conceive........

This was taken on July 1. What a great surprise!

Happy Birthday, Maya!
Today is Maya's 1st birthday, so we thought a little menagerie of her pictures would be a good present for all 3 of our readers since we last posted a pic of her from Christmas.
6 weeks
When we took her home.
Look how big her toy is in comparison.

She was so little she had to stand in her bowl to eat/drink.

Our Garden
First, in April, we made a garden box. This is Kenna, our little helper. She was great at helping with the garden, but she especially liked using the drill.
We dug up the hard clay (2 days of pick-axe work to turn over a 4'x8' area!) and added gardening soil.
Buff helper! This was so cute. Jason carried the first few bags to the garden, and all of a sudden I saw Kenna sneaking off to the garage. I followed her to see what her sneaky little self was up to and caught her trying to help out some more. She was so determined to move that bag of soil--too bad it weighed more than she did.

End of 2009
December - We did go to Disneyworld, but all the pictures were taken by Morgan's parents and we don't have any of them. Sorry. All you get is a glimpse of our pajamas and Maya's present.
